History

Champaign was first settled in 1855, when William and Harvey Elliott, brothers from Ohio, purchased two tracts of land along the Big Grove Creek. In 1855, they erected a cabin on their property, which became the first home in Champaign County. By 1860,Champaign’s population had grown to nearly 200 people. The city was incorporated in 1865.
