Rockaway was incorporated on June 19, 1894, from portions of Randolph Township. It was named for Rockaway Brook, which flows through the town.
The climate in Rockaway is humid continental (Köppen: Dfa) with hot, humid summers and cold winters. The town experiences four distinct seasons. The median temperature in summer is about 71.60–75.20 °F, while in winter it is around 11 to 32 °F.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 11.0 square miles (28.57 km), all of it land. Rockaway is located in a low-lying area of central New Jersey; several brooks flow through town before emptying into the Rockaway River, which runs along the borough’s southern border.
Rockaway is served by two New Jersey Transit lines. The Morristown Line provides service to Hoboken Terminal, with connections to Penn Station in Midtown Manhattan and Secaucus Junction. The Montclair-Boonton Line runs through the town on its way from Newark Broad Street station to Hackettstown. Rockaway is also served by local bus routes.
