Fort Hunt is a census-designated place (CDP) in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 16,383 at the 2022 census. Fort Hunt is located south of Alexandria and just east of Mount Vernon. The Fort Hunt CDP includes the separate communities of Fort Hunt and Grovesnor Estates.

History

Fort Hunt is named for the military installation Fort Hunt which operated from 1917 to 1946. The fort was used as a coastal defense site during World War I and World War II. It was also used as a prisoner-of-war camp during World War II. After the war, the fort was used as a housing site for United Nations employees. The Fort Hunt military installation was closed in 1946 and the land was sold to developers.
