History

The City of Waukegan is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan in northeastern Illinois, approximately 50 miles north of Chicago. The city is a diverse community with a rich history. Native Americans first inhabited the area now known as Waukegan, and the Potawatomi tribe was the last to live here before the arrival of European settlers in the early 1800s. The city was originally named “Little Fort” after the fort built by the United States Government during the War of 1812. In 1849, the name was changed to Waukegan, which means “little fort” in Potawatomi.
