History

Belleville was founded in 1839 from portions of Newark, Bloomfield, and Passaic. The town was named after French politician Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette when he visited the area in 1825. Belleville became a township on February 22, 1845, and portion of the township was ceded to Nutley in 1861. Belleville was incorporated as a town on April 11, 1874, based on the results of a referendum held that day. The town was reincorporated as a city on December 27, 1899.
