Livingston was incorporated on February 5, 1813, from portions of Fairfield, Essex County, and Springfield Township. The township was named after William Livingston (1723–1790), the first Governor of New Jersey.

Livingston was settled in 1699 by Puritans from Connecticut. The settlers purchased land from the Lenape Native Americans and named their settlement after William Livingston.


The climate in Livingston is mild, with temperatures ranging from an average low of 22 degrees Fahrenheit in January to an average high of 84 degrees Fahrenheit in July. Annual precipitation is about 45 inches.


Livingston is located in Essex County, New Jersey. It is situated about 20 miles from New York City and about 30 miles from Newark, NJ.


Livingston is served by the Livingston Mall Bus Terminal, which provides transportation to and from New York City. There are also several NJ Transit bus routes that serve Livingston.


The economy of Livingston is fairly diverse, with a mix of retail, manufacturing, and service businesses. The town’s largest employer is ShopRite, a grocery store chain. Other employers include the Livingston Mall, New Jersey Transit, and Saint Barnabas Medical Center.


Livingston is home to a number of public and private schools. The town’s public schools are part of the Livingston Public Schools district, which includes eleven elementary schools, three middle schools, and two high schools. Private schools in Livingston include the Newark Academy, Saint Rose of Lima School, and Seton Hall Preparatory School.

Parks and Recreation

Livingston offers its residents plenty of opportunities to get out and enjoy the town. There are over 20 parks and playgrounds, as well as an 18-hole golf course, a public pool, and several tennis courts. The town also has a farmers’ market, which is open from June to October.
