Paramus was incorporated on April 4, 1922, from portions of Midland Township, which now exists as Rochelle Park. The name is believed to be derived from the Lenape language word “pèhramus”, meaning “place of timber”, or possibly “clearing in the woods”.

Paramus is located 15 miles northwest of Midtown Manhattan and about 20 minutes from Newark Liberty International Airport.


Paramus is served by several major highways, including Interstate 95 (the New Jersey Turnpike), Interstate 80, the Garden State Parkway, Route 17 and Route 208. NJ Transit provides bus service to and from the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan and to other local points of interest.


The Paramus area is home to a number of large shopping malls, including the Westfield Garden State Plaza, one of the largest malls in the United States. The district includes seven elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools. Private schools in Paramus include the Bergen County Academies, a selective public magnet high school, as well as several Catholic schools.


Paramus is home to a number of parks and recreation areas, including the Van Saun County Park, which features a zoo, an amusement park, and a historic carousel. The borough is also home to the Bergen Performing Arts Center, which hosts a variety of concerts and events throughout the year.
