History

Rockaway was incorporated on June 19, 1894, from portions of Randolph Township. It was named for Rockaway Brook, which flows through the town.

Rockaway is located in a low-lying area of central New Jersey; several brooks flow through town before emptying into the Rockaway River, which runs along the borough’s southern border.

Rockaway is served by two New Jersey Transit lines. The Morristown Line provides service to Hoboken Terminal, with connections to Penn Station in Midtown Manhattan and Secaucus Junction.
