Voorhees was incorporated on March 1, 1899, from portions of Waterford and Delaware townships. The city was named for Foster M. Voorhees, the governor of New Jersey from 1886 to 1889 who served as a United States Senator from 1891 to 1897.


Voorhees has a humid continental climate (Köppen: Dfa). The median temperature in summer (July) is 22.0 °C, while in winter (January), it is −0.91 °C.


Voorhees is located in the Camden metropolitan area and is about 16 miles (26 km) east of Philadelphia. It is situated on the border of two counties, Camden County to its southwest and Gloucester County to its northeast. Voorhees Township completely surrounds the borough of Voorhees. The city is served by Interstate 295 and County Route515.


Public transportation to Philadelphia and other destinations is available from Voorhees through the PATCO Speedline, which has a station in the city, as well as New Jersey Transit buses. NJ Transit offers service on the 400, 450, 455, and 457 routes.


The economic base of Voorhees is composed of a diverse mix of businesses, including retail, professional services, manufacturing, and healthcare. The city’s central business district is home to a number of restaurants and shops. Voorhees Town Center, located just off Route 73, is the largest shopping mall in the city.


Voorhees is served by the Eastern Camden County Regional School District, which operates four elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. The district also serves the boroughs of Bellmawr, Gloucester City, Haddon Heights, Runnemede, and Woodlynne.
