Wall was incorporated on March 7, 1851, from portions of Howell Township. Portions of Wall were taken to form Brick Township in the newly created Ocean County on February 15, 1850. It was named for General Garret D. Wall, a leader during the Mexican-American War and later Acting Governor of New Jersey. General Wall is buried at All Saints Cemetery in Manasquan.
