Rochester is a city located in Monroe County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 210,565. Rochester is the third most populous city in New York state after Buffalo and Yonkers.

The area that is now Rochester was originally inhabited by the Seneca people, one of the Six Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy. French explorers Jacques Marquette and Louis Hennepin visited the site in the 1600s, and the area was later claimed by the French and British during the Seven Years’ War (1756-1763). The site of Rochester was designated as a military site in 1758 by colonel John Bradstreet, during his campaign to establish Fort Niagara. He named the site after his friend and fellow officer, Colonel Rochester. The Seneca tribe was forced to cede its territory in the Treaty of Big Tree in 1797, and Rochester became part of the United States.

Rochester was one of America’s first boomtowns, initially due to the Erie Canal and then as a manufacturing center. Several of the region’s universities (notably the University of Rochester and Rochester Institute of Technology) have renowned research programs.
